You must have missed the layers upon layers of government regulation that FAILED to prevent this latest economic debacle.
FYI, "self-regulating" ended long before the beginning of the LAST century. You are way behind the curve.
Government doesn't regulate effectively and we all know it including Barney The Clown.
In a rare moment of candor, captured in this video, he admits to "...trying on every front to increase the role of government...".
It is a shame if you count yourself among the legions of brain dead citizens who do not see the ongoing failure of government controlled or regulated anything that goes on right before their eyes.
Government IS the problem.
